The DrayTek Vigor DV2710 – The Inside Review!

Posted by Paul Warren on December 11th, 2008

We have received a sample of DrayTek Vigor2710Vn from DrayTek Corp and have been impressed by the aesthetic and functional designs of the casing, so much so that we figured we would do a quick review on it!

With the streamlined shape from all angles, the casing is eye-catching the moment you open the box. It gives off an impression that it has technical and artistic quality – setting it apart from traditional, boring router boxes!

Since 2004, DrayTek has worked closely with a Denmark design house, Designnord for the casings for Vigor2500V, Vigor2820, Vigor2710 and Vigor2110. The Vigor2710 casing has white PU Varnish style featuring artistic-feel, humid-resistant, germ proof, dust-proof, etc. Designed to be placed standing up on desk or hung on the wall, Vigor2710 fits in nicely with normal office/home settings without being intrusive. You will want to exhibit this router, unlike the old “ugly” router which you many try hard to hide.

On the right edge of the front panel are LED indicators including ACT, WLAN, DSL, LAN1~4, USB, Phone1~2, Line and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). On the right side, a WPS button allows quick setting of WPS making it easy for non-IT users to setup Wireless security.

The top groove has vents for heat dissipation and 3 connectors for the Wireless antennas. DrayTek provides 3 plastic caps for the connectors to minimise static and dirt during transportation.

Three hanging grooves are provided at the back so the unit can be hung on the wall if so desired.

On the left side, there are 1 x DSL port (RJ-11), 4 x LAN ports (RJ-45), 1 x USB port and a WLAN button for turning WLAN on/off easily.

Unlike traditional routers, the bottom of Vigor2710 is not flat, but instead is arc-curved allowing it to house a power socket, a reset button, 3 VoIP ports (2x FXS and 1 x FXO, for VoIP models only) and more vents for heat dissipation – further improving the router’s capability to dissipate hear and thus the insuring rock solid performance, that DrayTek is renowned for.

Compared to Vigor2700VG, Vigor2710 is wider, such that it can be placed in a standing up position. A stand further stabilises the router when it’s in the standing-up position.

The designer has provided space for the telephone and power cables to be laid neatly on the left side and at the bottom of the router.

The new DrayTek Vigor2710 series is feature rich and with many surprises and we expect most customers will be suitably impressed. The R&D team in DrayTek is, as usual, working hard to fix the firmware for the Vigor2710 series, in the hope that the customers will have nothing but good experience with the products. This is also the objective that we have been pursuing in the last 6 years. The exact ETA date is not yet set by DrayTek Corporate, but we expect Vigor2710 and Vigor2710n to be in stock before Christmas 2008, while Vigor2710Vn further behind because more firmware and fine tuning are required.

Cheers,
Paul !

somehow it reminds me of a organic fishy look. although if someone vertically mounted it i can see dust collecting in those grooves…

  • Ben

any idea how much these units will cost? more or less than the equivalent 2700s??

    • Paul Warren

      Hi Ben!

The 2710 will retail for around $219.95.

Keep in mind, this is retail pricing – we’ll be cheaper obviously!

  • PT

Any further news on when the vn version be out?

    • Paul Warren

Hi there PT – thanks for the comment!

From the information I have on hand, it appears as though the DrayTek 2710N and 2710VN will not be available until late January or possibly early February.

DrayTek are still working on the wireless code in firmware.

What a beautifully designed and finished unit, very sexy indeed!

And being DrayTek the beauty will be more than skin deep.

    Very nice indeed.

really keen on the 2710n model!

    no gigabit ethernet though?

    Hi Paul,

Any news when the VoIP variant of this modem will be out and how much you’re going to sell it for?

I’m a very upset user of Billion 7404VGP-A modem. I’ve had nothing but problems with it.
Even an official from Billion has admitted they never fixed all the bugs

“The only general issue with rebooting is related to PC startup & this is being followed up by Engineers.
The only other major issue is with garbled calls & this has largely but not completely resolved with 5.53c.dg8, this is still being fine tuned by Engineers to resolve for those still experiencing this.”

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1027707&p=50 – They had gore to say “general issue” !!!! It’s a major issue that’s been around for years.

Everyone is raving about how good DrayTek modems are. Can’t wait to see it for myself.

    Hi Paul,

I hope the 2710vn isn’t too far away either as my 7402vgp is only just hanging in there, port 2 has now died, who knows how long before the whole unit craps out and the VOIP has been ordinary for so long, when it used to be so good.

Really looking forward to using a stable and reliable modem which everyone seems to comment about.

  • QT

I am not sure whether to wait for the 2710vn to come around or go with another model. My ISP is ready to connect me up this week and I have not got a modem for it. Any further news?

  • jake bailey

  • Martin Mitchell ” Canetoad”
