Mechanical keyboards, what’s the big deal?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Recently Warcom has been really buzzing with Mechanical keyboard fever. All of the boys in the office have been wanting one due to the extensive testing we have been doing lately.

At the moment, only my self and Adrian are rocking mechanical keyboards. I’m using a cheaper Chinese made Adesso copy sample keyboard, it’s rediculously loud but mighty nice to type on.

Plain Mechanical Keyboards - Maybe a little bit on the boring side?

Adrian however is using the much quieter Lenovo keyboard that’s basically a reissue of the classic IBM mechanical keyboards of the day. This keyboard is massively awesome and types like a dream without all the unnecessary volume that I get from my cheap-o Chinese copy.

What about gamers?!

Now that the gamers have caught on that some of these sweet OFFICE keyboards are just WAY nicer to type on, have faster keys and are just generally better quality they have wanted these sweet keybords with all the gaming bells and whistles.

Gaming mechanical keyboards are born!

The KING of the gaming keyboards as of now is undoubltably the Mionix ZIbal 60 that we looked at last week and everyone in the office LOVED it.

But we do have some alternatives if you can’t wait the next few months for them to become available.

Want to know more about Mechanical keyboards? Check out what Wikipedia has to say:

Mechanical-switch keyboards use real switches underneath every key. Depending on the construction of the switch, such keyboards have varying response and travel times. Notable keyboards utilizing this technology are the Apple Extended Keyboard (the original and/or the “II”), as well as its modern imitator, the MatiasTactile Pro. These two keyboards use ALPS switches. On PCs, the OmniKey series from Northgate Computers was popular, and the line is now carried by Creative Vision Technologies under the Avant brand.

Cherry Corporation of Germany also makes mechanical switches used in special-purpose and high-end keyboards. Their popular MX series of keyswitches are available in five distinct designs, often referred to by the color of the center stem to which the keycap attaches: Cherry MX Black switches present a linear feel where the force increases as the key is pressed, Cherry MX Brown switches provide tactile feedback as the switch travels over a physical bump as the key hits its actuation point, Cherry MX Blue switches utilize a tactile feel and also an audible click sound just before reaching their actuation point, Cherry MX Clear switches contain a similar design as MX Browns but require more force to depress and do not provide the audible click as found in the MX Blues, and, lastly, Cherry MX Red switches possess an identical construction as MX Blacks but require less force to depress. Each of the switch designs is desirable for specific objectives: With games, having a tactile bump is useless, so a smooth, linear switch is best, as found in the MX Blacks and Reds. MX Browns, Blues and Clears are designed more with typing tasks in mind, owing to their tactile bump either before or right at the actuation point. The Browns and Clears do not contain an audible “click” sound as found in the Blues, and as such are not quite as desirable in a straightforward typing scenario, instead being considered as more of a “middle-ground” between typing and gaming.

The Mighty Kaiser baas Bluetooth Mini Keyboard!

Friday, December 10th, 2010

So FINALLY i have had a chance to road test the Kaiser Baas Bluetooth Mini Keyboard.

WOW! I am SO impressed with this little thing! I have spent the past few hours playing around with the keyboard on boxee. Who needs a boxee box? You can have an all in one media centre and use the Kaiser Baas Bluetooth Mini Keyboard to easily navigate the menues… Along with that, you can easily browse emails, youtube and facebook.

For size comparison vs the keyboard on a macbook pro! (Sorry about the iPhone photo..)

As you can see the thing is fairly small. But is relatively easy to type on for something of this size. Im actually im using it to type this blog post!

Finally, we get to the thing that makes this keyboard WAY ahead of the rest. The mouse component.

Think of it as one of the control sticks on a Playstation control. Very VERY easy to use. It also has a right and left click on the other side… To top it off… A TOUCH scroll pad! Really cool..

Kaiser Baas

Kaiser Baas Bluetooth Mini Keyboard with Boxee!

This arvo i think im going to try my hand at using it to play some games.. You hold it a bit like a game controler.. So why not?

For a HTPC, i think this is uber win. Grab one today on our store HERE

EDIT: If you have any questions post them here.. Also feel free to come down to the office and try mine!
