Apple OSX Lion is coming next month (July 2011)

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

All of us Mac fan boys are pretty excited, Only 2 weeks to go untill the next major upgrade to OSX comes!

This “fall”  will see the NEW OSX with a claimed 250+ new features. Of this 250, to be honest I will only probably notice A few of them.. But A few big new features I wont complain with.

Some of the highlights will include:

LaunchPad: Launchpad is a new, full-screen home for all the apps on your Mac. Just click the Launchpad icon in your Dock. Your open windows fade away, replaced by a full-screen display of all your apps. Arrange your apps any way you want, group them together in folders, or delete them from your Mac with ease. And when you download an app from the Mac App Store, it automatically appears in Launchpad, ready to blast off.

Airdrop: Looking for a fast way to share files with people nearby? With AirDrop, you can send files to anyone around you wirelessly — no Wi-Fi network required. And no complicated setup or special settings. Just click the AirDrop icon in the Finder sidebar, and your Mac automatically discovers other AirDrop users within about 30 feet of you. To share a file, simply drag it to someone’s name. Once accepted, the fully encrypted file transfers directly to that person’s Downloads folder.

Facetime: FaceTime for Mac lets you make video calls to other Intel-based Mac computers, iPad 2, iPhone 4, or the latest iPod touch.

Mission Control: Mission Control brings together full-screen apps, Dashboard, Exposé and Spaces in one new feature that gives you a bird’s-eye view of everything on your system. With a single swipe on the trackpad, your desktop zooms out to Mission Control. Think of it as the hub of your system: View everything and go anywhere with just a click.

Resume: Now apps you close will reopen right where you left off, so you never have to start from scratch again. And when you install software updates, you no longer need to save your work, close your apps and spend valuable time setting everything up again. With Resume, you can restart your Mac and return to what you were doing — with all your apps in the exact places you left them.

Multi-Touch Gestures: Multi-Touch gestures transform the way you interact with your Mac, making all you do more intuitive and direct. Now an even richer Multi-Touch experience comes to OS X Lion. Enjoy more fluid and realistic gesture responses, including rubber-band scrolling, page and image zoom, and full-screen swiping.

Multi-Touch Gestures

Theres also many other various features, you can find them over at the Apple website. We can all agree that these features are going to be a big plus to an already great operating system.

Airdrop will be pretty cool for businesses that run on Mac, unfortunately I’m the only one running OSX in our office (Graeme uses a mac with Windows 7 on it) But hopefully in the near future my colleagues will see the light (and get sick of windows crashing and generally being windows) and buy a MacBook like me.

OSX Lion will be available in the Mac OSX App store as an upgrade for $31.99 inc GST.

Please note: If you are running OSX Leopard still you will have to update to the latest version of Snow Leopard before you can go to Lion.

The Mac App store hits OSX!

Friday, January 7th, 2011

This morning after reading a thread on OCAU i learnt that the App store has come to Mac! I knew it was coming in Lion, but i did not expect to see it today!

The Mac App store

After a few hours of playing around in it, i have found it mind blowing, Its just so simple and handy. I really think this will be a massive incentive to developers to write programs for Mac. I really can not see any negative thing about the app store.

The Big 4 main great things/points about the app store (In my opinion):

  1. Very easy to use! Even Mac newbies will be able to find compatible programs, games etc. Just like on the iPhone. And we all know the biggest thing the iPhone has over other phones is the App store.
  2. Developers, A GREAT distribution stream. Its like steam.. But not just for games. And its part of your OS!
  3. BUY, DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL WITH A SINGLE CLICK! How easy is that?! If you ask me, my reply would be: Easy.
  4. Auto notification of available updates. Stay up to date easily.. Just like on the iPhone. :-D

As you can see, im pretty excited about this. Its really good to see Apple putting out some cool new software updates!

EDIT: After even more digging about the new App store i have discovered something really.. Interesting.

Generally when you purchase software, you purchase it to a machine and its locked to that machine (Sometimes you can have 2 or 3 on the same key). With the Mac App store, this isn’t the case! The software is purchased to the user. Its not restricted to that machine. This is a MASSIVE change to the classic licensing system that Windows users have to endure.

I can’t think of a better time to ditch Micro$oft and turn to the dark side ;-)

Mac App Store Downloads Top One Million in First Day

January 7, 2011

Apple announced today that over one million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store in the first day. “We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”
