Telephone Systems For Start Ups!

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Starting a small business can be a daunting task, there is so much to organise, plan and execute all whilst ensuring that the ship sails and doesn’t sink. One of the last things that is on a business owners mind is how to setup a telephone system, who to speak to, or where to go – and inevitably what will it all cost?

For most startups there is often difficulty knowing when to implement a telephone system. Most entrepreneurs are used to working primarily from their mobile phone. Operating solely on a mobile phone can be a limit to your growth especially when you start bringing on new staff. You are also always tied to the one number and the one simultaneous call and if it’s a personal mobile number you could have potential privacy issues after hours. There are a number of benefits to using VoIP and setting up a phone system, the main of them come out of flexibility, cheap phone calls, and in particular with vtalk the ease of setup and implementation. One of the great benefits of being a startup looking to implement VoIP is that if you choose to go IP right from the start. Which means that like your new venture you are literally boss of where you calls go, who you are with, what plan you go on and best of all you can own everything.

As a start up, here’s a couple of hot tips we’d like to share with you:

Internet Connectivity

For a startup business running from home, you can get away with using an ADSL 2+ connection (even naked connection with no line rental) in conjunction with a basic VoIP (SIP) service/plan. This type of service on a home connection should take you all the way until you’re ready to make the move into your own office as far as phone calls and use of internet go for up to 5 people.

Head over to our Broadband Deals page, to checkout the awesome offers we currently have available.

VoIP Plan

VoIP plans are what are now supplied by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Lines are now called channels and having two channels is now consider standard. Most ISP’s will charge about $10 per channel per month as opposed to having line rental at around $30 per month on traditional phone systems. Picking a VoIP plan can be tricky as there are so many out there, we recommend having your VoIP/SIP plan with the same provider as your Internet. We recommend and use Internode NodePhone.

Whilst you are setting up and deciding which number to advertise, it’s also a good time to consider if you should look at obtaining a 1300 number. The benefit is that like a VoIP number it moves with your business if you grow and relocate. Callers in also pay a local call cost only and it can give your business a national footprint overnight!

For 1300 numbers – we recommend Telecube.

Hardware:

As a one off cost of $1499 or $1500 bucks in non retail speak, you can grab yourself a vtalk that will plug directly into your network and run your telecommunications for your next 10 staff! If you’re serious about vtalk one of the great things is that the vtalk box is compatible with different handset manufacturers like Snom, Aastra, Yealink & Linksys, so you can pick which handsets you’re comfortable with. The other things to consider are, is your modem / router going to be suitable for VoIP and do you have enough free ports in your router/Switch?

We generally politely recommend you upgrading your modem for a quality DrayTek  modem anyway.

What You Need:

If you’re a start up business and looking to get your hands on a vtalk,  here’s an awesome bundle that you should take advantage of.

Our 3 user special including a vtalk, 3 Basic Snom handsets and a draytek modem router.
