Since we announced that the HP Microserver N36lis in stock we’ve been flooded with emails asking if certain upgrades will be compatible with their HP Microserver. By the looks of it, lots of customers are looking at upgrading their Microserver and us the Microserver as a media pc, meaning people are looking at upgrades for HDD’s, RAM and Video Cards.  It’s not so easy to tell what and what doesn’t fit in a mini ATX board, with a limited 150w (max 200w) PSU and ECC slots for ram.

Graphics cards

Gigabyte ATI HD 5450 PCI-E 2.0 512MB | — | EVGA PCIe G210 1GB Low Profile Heatsink

You might be slightly confused, for these graphics cards state a minimum 300w PSU to work, however that isn’t the case, DO NOT overclock.

Ram

KINGSTON 1x 4GB 1333MHz ECCHPPn LIFETIME WARRANTY

KINGSTON 8GB 1333MHz REG ECCMODULE

HDD

Samsung EcoGreen 2Tb HDD|–|OCZ SSD 2.5″ SATA3 120G Agility 3 |

The microserver has 4 slots for hard drives. I reccomend 3, 2tb drives and 1 solid state drive for startup.

Optical Drive

Lite-On 12X BLURAY BURNER |–| ASUS SATA DRW-24B3ST Black Internal 24x

It would be really good to know what network cards if any are compatible as I would like to add a NIC or two depending on the cards single/dual being capable.

Can you guys look into some nic cards for this unit.  Would like to add one more as i am using mine as a full blown server running virtualization would like to use as a firewall/gateway machine as well.  So far have managed to decomission two old boxes would like to decomission one more hence the nic card requirement. :)

I purchased the N40L server and I am wondering if the 8GIG ram module really works? I got another Kingston ECC Registered 1333 8Gig ram which does not work (screen stays black when powering on).
Can you really confirm that this 8Gig module is working on N40L?

Kingston page says 8Gig max: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=74512&mfr=HP%2FCompaq&model=ProLiant+N40L+MicroServer&search_type=&root=de&LinkBack=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kingston.com%2Fderoot&Sys=74512-HP%2FCompaq-ProLiant+N40L+MicroServer&distributor=0&submit1=Finden

    Thanks a lot!

Registered RAM is not supported. Only ECC on-buffered will work on N36L and N40L. Don’t know why this is listed here :-(

Even on the product page it says “Fits perfectly into a HP Microserver!”Is this a 100% information that registered RAM does not work?
