Mark Freidin joins Warcom!

Friday, April 27th, 2012

The Warcom team has grown steadily since our start way back in 2005 and we’ve been fortunate to work with some really amazing people. Today we’re excited to announce a new addition to the family – Mark Freidin, who is joining us as an advisor.

Formerly the Chief Operating Officer at Catchoftheday.com.au, Scoopon.com.au and Groceryrun.com.au, Mark was the key driver in the due diligence process which led to an $80 million investment in these companies by New York based Tiger Global, and James Packer in April 2011.

Here’s some background on the decision.

Over the last five years, we’ve accomplished a lot on our own and we’re proud of what we’ve been able to do without outside help. But we think we can do even better with the right kind of help. And we’re picky.

What we’ve been looking for is the wisdom of a very special entrepreneur who’s been through what we’re going through. Someone who sees things a little differently and makes us feel right at home. Someone with a long term outlook, not a build-to-flip mentality. We found a perfect match in Mark. Mark is our kinda guy.

It will be great learning from Mark as we build Warcom into a great company. We hope this boost of ambition, and Marks’s personal vote of confidence, will help us achieve our big plans.

Here we go!

Anzac Day 2012 Closure – Why is it a Public Holiday?

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Hi everyone – just a reminder that we’ll be closed this Wednesday for Anzac Day; though – I’m not really sure why.

—————–

On behalf of everyone here at Warcom, I would like to express our sincere and heart felt thank you to all the service men and women who served in Gallipoli in World War I on April 25, 1915.

If not for the bravery of all military personnel who participated in this campaign, Australia would not be the prosperous and truly luck country it is today.

Thank you.

… There is one thing, that has been bothering me about Anzac Day though – why do we have a public holiday?

My view on this is that of a very simplistic one.

The amazing men and women that fought in World War I, did so – so that our country could become what it is today.

  • They would have wanted us to be prosperous.
  • They would have wanted us to be stable / safe / protected.
  • They certainly would not have wanted anyone in Australia be homeless. (This is a serious issue).
  • They certainly would not have wanted anyone in Australia to go without proper medical treatment. (This is happening).
  • And most of all – they would have wanted us to look after each other.

Now not to get overly political on this, but the five previous bullet points I have mentioned; coupled with the fact Australias economy, employment & growth is not exactly amazing at the moment has me intrigued.

Truth be told, and disregarding the mining industry; Australia is in a pretty woeful position at the moment.

  • Interest rates are screwed – so consumers are not spending.
  • We’re about to be hit with a carbon tax – this is going to be a disaster for Australia – this will lead to mass unemployment.
  • Retail shops are seriously hurting – which will also lead to severe unemployment.
  • And the monkeys running the country – they seriously have no idea.

As a small business owner and as a human being I’ll be working Wednesday.

My employees need their jobs, they need the roof’s over their heads,

Sincerely,
Paul Warren.
